Sweden - Animal bedding
Process:
Grass briquetting
Type of grass:
Reed Canary Grass
Products:
Animal bedding, biogas
In the Swedish demo, Reed Canary Grass is shredded and pressed into briquettes – an innovative material for animal bedding which afterwards can easily be used as fertiliser, as well as for biogas and heat production.
Reed Canary Grass is a much more suitable source for animal bedding as the materials used so far – sawdust and wood shavings – and hold more potential for the use in biorefinery processes or material development. Furthermore, the bedding with manure will result in higher efficiency of the biogas process and contribute to increase circularity.
Future stakeholders can use the gathered knowledge and experience from the Swedish demo:
– Buying the product Klimatströ produced of reed canary grass.
– Get information about how to set up a production line based on the flexible polish screw press briquette technique and the ambient special adapted equipment.
– Knowledge about how to cultivate reed canary grass and its characteristic including the good ability to capture carbon can be transmitted.
– Knowledge about the reuse of the animal bedding residue either by spreading it on arable land as manure from horse (monogastric) farms or as digestate from cows (poli-gastric)
